It's hard to believe we're already one month into 2024! We're excited to bring you this life, business, and kelp update to kick-off the year!
Life Update

We're moving to Alaska! This was always the plan, of course, but now it's official! We have an apartment lease starting February 1st in Ketchikan, Alaska, where our kelp farming and processing operations will be located.
We look forward to moving up to Ketchikan next month and starting to put together the pieces of our business. We'll be in the market for a good truck, good rain gear, and a good boat. We'll also be touring local facilities, one of which will house our future kelp processing lines, warehouse, and distribution space!

We're excited to announce that we've joined the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation Startup Accelerator! AFDF has been supporting the Alaskan seafood industry since 1978 and launched their accelerator program to advance sustainable economic development in the Blue Economy.
Joining the AFDF startup accelerator gives us a chance to work closely with their network of early-stage founders, investors, philanthropists, and strategic partners. We're excited to have been selected by the AFDF Accelerator Program and look forward to working with them and their network as we build towards our big dream of revolutionizing kelp for a more sustainable future.

One of the (many) ways that kelp is good for our planet is through its ability to sequester CO2 from the atmosphere and ocean. Much like terrestrial plants, kelp absorbs CO2 and sunlight and through photosynthesis produces oxygen.
The jury is still out as to exactly how much CO2 is sequestered and for what time period, but much research is being done on the topic. A new study is even attempting to answer that question by sampling marine sediment for kelp DNA.
Going even further, Japan as a country is quantifying the amount of CO2 that Japanese kelp and eelgrass beds absorb every year in an effort to track their progress towards carbon net neutral.
It's great to see more work being done on quantifying the positive impacts that kelp makes to the environment.
