Introducing Our Summer Intern, Ayobami Akinnawo
We're pleased to introduce our intern for this summer, Ayobami Akinnawo. Ayobami grew up in the southwestern region of Nigeria and has a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Ekiti State University.
After graduation, he worked as a quality assurance and quality control analyst, where he gained valuable industry experience in pasta production.
Ayobami is currently pursuing his PhD in Biochemistry and Neuroscience at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. His research interests include metal complexes, chemotherapy, and the development of ovarian cancer drugs.
He is passionate about kelp and committed to providing sustainable solutions through science. Ayobami's diverse background bridges industrial experience and cutting-edge academic research in the natural sciences.
As an intern this summer, Ayobami will help us improve quality assurance at our Ketchikan facility and optimize how we extract high-value compounds from our kelp, such as amino acids, plant phenolics, phytohormones, and carbohydrates.
New Research Partnership with Dr. DeVetter
We are thrilled to announce a new research partnership with Dr. Lisa Wasko DeVetter of Washington State University, who will be researching how KelpEdge™ can help berry growers in the Pacific Northwest combat the growing threat of heat stress.
This collaboration builds directly on Dr. DeVetter's recently published research in Scientific Reports, part of the Nature Portfolio, where she and her team demonstrated that kelp extracts improved photosynthetic efficiency and antioxidant capacity in heat-stressed red raspberries.
This research has important implications for Pacific Northwest growers. Whatcom County, Washington, alone produces approximately 85% of all raspberries grown in the United States.
Yet a single heat wave, like the record-breaking event of June 2021, drove Whatcom County's harvest down 30% compared to the prior year and down 40% from its 2018 peak.
With extreme heat events becoming more frequent across the region, this research has the potential to demonstrate that KelpEdge™ is a powerful, practical, and science-backed tool for protecting crops, profitability, and farmer livelihoods.
